We love hearing from our students no matter what they have to say, but when we hear of a student being published, we just want to shout it from the rooftops! We’re a little scared of heights, so we’ll go with a blog post instead.
Gabe says:
My latest piece is for Essential Baby. It's one where I stumbled on the story on a fairly obscure site, and then thought how I could make it more relevant to Aussie parents.
I pitched it, got a pretty rapid ‘yes' and it was fairly easy to write.
Strangely enough – I later heard from another AWC ‘Magazines and Newspapers' student to say they'd pitched the same story, and been told “Sorry, someone has beaten you to it!” I'm sorry Jo… I'll buy you a coffee to make up for it!
One of the great things about the AWC ‘Mags and Papers' course was the way Valerie drummed into us the ‘relevancy' factor. This made it much easier for the editor to say YES to my article rather than just getting an internal writer to do a simple rewrite of the original story.
